L-E girls begin series

- By Brian Tyl

MARSHALL, Texas—

After clinching a bi-district title, Liberty

Eylau looks to extend its softball playoff journey.

The Lady Leopards clash with Bullard in a Class 4A best-of-three area round series starting today.

The first game is set for 5 p.m. at East Texas Baptist University. Game 2 is 5 p.m. Friday, and a Game 3, if needed, will be played after Game 2.

“We have momentum, but both teams do,” L-E head coach Kendra Cullum said. “People have looked down on Liberty-Eylau, so we want to prove to them that we can do it. I felt like we played well in the bi-district game. Our defense made big plays, and I expected them to continue making big plays. If we can keep the ball in the ballpark to give our defense a chance to make plays, I think we’ll have a good chance of winning.

“Bullard has a pretty solid pitcher so that is what we have been working on all week. She throws hard, and we have been working on hitting firmer pitches. If we can get base runners, then I feel like we will manufacture runs. If we can keep the score close, I feel like we’ll be able to score more.”

Likely starters are Bella Gunderson in the circle, and Tamara Norris behind the plate. McKenzye Williamson will play first, Tori Foster is at second, Kayla Norris at shortstop and Savannah Phelps at third.

The outfield features Tyrah Venable in right, Keely Norris in center and Mariah Coleman in left. Makayla Power will be the designated player.

The winner advances to the regional quarterfinals next week against either Carthage or Rains.
