CLASS 5A BI-DISTRICT SERIES
Texas High swept Lucas Lovejoy. The Tigers shut out the Leopards, 3-0, behind Walker Davis, who tossed a 2-hitter Friday in Game 2 of the 5A bi-district baseball series at Tiger Field.
Davis needed just 69 pitches to pitch the complete game. He struck out four, walked none and hit a batter.
Jordan Yoder took the loss for the Leopards (18-14), allowing three runs—one earned—on seven hits, with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Tigers (25-5) advance to the area round next week.
Chris Lyles beat out an infield hit for the Tigers on a high chopper in the bottom of the first inning, and he advanced from first to third on a sacrifice bunt. But a fielder’s choice to first resulted in a rundown between third and home, Lyles being tagged out for the second out.
Jacob Terwilliger lined a 2-out single to left for the Leopards in the second inning, but Davis picked him off at first to end the inning.
Dakota Turner grounded a leadoff single for Texas High in the third. After a strikeout, Lyles beat out an infield hit to put two on. The runners advanced on a wild pitch on another strikeout, and Chris Sutton beat out an infield hit to first to plate Turner.
A deep fly out to right-center ended the inning, leaving runners on the corners.
In the fifth, Turner lined a single to center to start the inning. Lyles walked with one out, and Sutton sent the first pitch he saw to the warning track in left. However, Mason Marsh made a running catch at the wall to end the threat and the inning.
After Marsh’s stand-up double in the third for Lovejoy, Davis retired nine in a row before hitting Ralph Rucker in the sixth. Rucker moved to second on a groundout for the second out, but was stranded there, preserving the 1-0 THS lead.
Conner Allred beat out the fourth infield single of the game by the Tigers to lead off the sixth, and Rian Cellers’ hard grounder to center went for a single to put runners on the corners. Cellers stole second, and Turner was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs.
An error sent Allred and Cellers home to extend Texas High’s lead to 3-0.
Turner was 2 for 2, and Lyles
2 for 3 to lead the Tigers’ 7-hit attack.
