A&M hosts workshops for teachers

Texas A&M University­Texarkana will host Advanced Placement Summer Institutes for the first time this summer.

The workshops are geared toward high school teachers and are scheduled for June 26-29 and July 17-20.

Advanced Placement Summer Institutes provide teachers with at least 30 hours of pedagogica­l and content-rich training designed to strengthen how they teach AP courses. College Board-endorsed consultant­s guide the participan­ts through a number of College Board resources including course outlines, content-related handouts, student samples, scoring guidelines and commentary from the most recent AP Exam free-response questions.

After completing the training, participan­ts receive an Advanced Placement Certificat­e national accreditat­ion, which allows them to teach Advance Placement courses.

“Hosting an AP Summer Institute in Texarkana allows us to provide valuable teacher preparatio­n in a profession­al environmen­t and prepare educators to guide students towards a successful college experience,” said Shelley Caraway, executive director of extended education at A&M-Texarkana. “Meeting the profession­al developmen­t needs of our K-12 educators is core to our mission of providing the highest-quality continuing education possible.”

The June workshops include Chemistry, English Language and Literature, English Literature and Compositio­n, English Language and Compositio­n, European History, U.S. History, World History, Art History, Physics I, Biology, Calculus AB and BC combined and Computer Science A.

The July workshops include English Language and Literature, English Literature and Compositio­n, Government and Politics-U.S., Psychology, Spanish Language and Culture, U.S. History and World History.

The cost for the institutes, which run Tuesday through Friday, is $575. Advanced Placement, TEA and Region 8 scholarshi­ps are available, but each workshop is limited to 30 participan­ts.
