Brahms in spotlight for Mother’s Day
Two gorgeous sonatas by Johannes Brahms are center stage in Mount Vernon Music’s Mother’s Day program “Woodwind Fireworks and Two Takes on Brahms” at 3 p.m. Sunday in Mount Vernon Music Hall.
Because they were originally written for clarinet and piano, and then revised by the composer for his other favorite instrument, the viola, MVM presents one on each instrument, along with sweet and sparkling flute trios by Bohuslav Martinu and Reynaldo Hahn, and a bewitching work with folktune influences by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian for clarinet, violin and piano.
This promises to be a delightfully unique program that any music-loving mother would enjoy. Performing will be Ebonee Thomas, flute; Daryl Coad clarinet; Mark Miller, violin; Ute Miller, viola; and Evan Mitchell, piano.
Winners of this year’s Betty Whitlock Scholarship Awards will showcase their talent in a “Young Stars” pre-concert at 2:30 pm. They include Randi Brannan, saxophone, of Mineola; Seth Carter, tuba, of Paris; Craig Crawford, piano, of Texarkana; Sam Greenwell, marimba, of Paris; and Madeline Majors, voice, of Mount Vernon.
Tickets are $10 for MVM members, $20 for non-members, and $5 for college students with valid ID. Children’s admission through high school is free. (Eighth grade and younger must be accompanied by an adult ticketholder.)
Memberships in MVM start at $25 and support all the organization’s work, including scholarships for young musicians and outreach work for schools and seniors. Memberships are good for the year June 1 through May 31, and members receive discounts on ticket pricing. Details can be found at MVM’s website.
