Razorbacks start postseason today

- By Earl Gill

GREENWOOD, Ark.— Arkansas High’s baseball squad is set to begin their postseason today.

The Razorbacks (18-9) will take on Searcy (8-17) in the first round of the Class 6A state baseball tournament at Bulldog Field in Greenwood, beginning at 3 p.m.

“I really don’t know a ton about those guys, and I haven’t been able to get a ton of information,” head baseball coach Layne Berry said. “Their record isn’t good, but that can always fool you heading into the playoffs. They have a few good pitchers, and the games they lost were close ballgames on the stat sheet.”

The Hogs have Wren Williams at catcher, Austin Nix at first base, Graydon Martin at second, Nick Vaughn at third, Cody Adcock

at shortstop, Matthew Mobley in left field, Drake Browning in center and Gage Gore in right field. Dylan Adcock will handle the pitching duties in the opening round.

“We plan to start Dylan on the mound,” Berry said. “If he goes out and plays like we know he can or even close to it, we should be successful. Hitting wise, they’re fairly young overall.”

The battle-tested Hogs are ready for whatever challenge awaits them in the opening round.

“We only lost nine game this season, and seven have been by one or two runs,” Berry said. “These last few ballgames have turned in our favor, and we were able to win those one-run games. Hopefully, we will continue that, but I also hope it’s not that close. We’re the visitors, so hopefully we will come out and get some runs early.”

AHS has scored 173 runs, while giving up 96 runs this season. The Lions have scored 111 runs, while dropping 161 runs to opponents throughout the season.

“We have multiple guys we can throw at them if we need to,” Berry said. “We have to take care of Game 1, and if we do, we will face Greenwood in the second round. We know we have our work cut out for us this week. It’s hard to look past someone when you’re in the bracket portion of the tournament.

“This is a good group. This is probably one of the better groups I’ve had in my tenure here. We know what we’re capable of, so at this point it’s about us taking care of business.”

The winner will face top-ranked Greenwood on Friday at 3 p.m.
