New Boston nets 9-3 win in game two

- By Grant Minor

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas—New Boston toppled New Dianna 9-3 in game two of the class 3A region II playoffs hosted in Mount Pleasant at Lady Tiger’s Field.

Angel Evans hit back to back homers, the first in the second inning with one, and the second a solo in the third, to lead the Lion’s (218) hitters.

“You get excited for the senior Angel,” said Lion’s head coach BJ Brown. “She’s put in the time and the effort, and to watch her have success that’s why you’re into the coaching business anyways—to see kids like like have a good time and

do well.”

In addition to Evans Laura Hurst had two doubles and three RBI, Alexis Modern had two singles, Haley McAlexander had a triple, and Alaysia Henderson, Morgan McAlexander, and McKenzee Thomas had a single each.

After both teams went threeupin the first inning, Kloe Meador broke the ice for the Lady Eagles (23-2-1) with a double to center field, and managed to score off a Lion’s error. 1-0 New Dianna.

The Anngel answered for the Lions in the bottom of the second with her first homer to score Morgan McAlexander and herself. Thomas followed with a single to left and Hurst brought her home with her own single to left.

“The girls have done well,” said coach Brown. “They do a pretty good job of communicating with each other and reminding each other where they are suppose to be. You know, we challenge them at this point in the game: ‘it’s the little bitty things, the not being set up or being in the wrong place at the wrong time, that can really hurt you.’”

New Boston’s pitcher, Morgan McAlexander, forced a three and out to start the third frame.

She has been that work in progress,” said coach Brown. “When I say that I mean she’s put herself through the works. She’s wanting to put in extra time and she does that. When she is on and she is in the strike zone she is tough. She’s got a little bulldog mentality. She loves to compete and we enjoy watching her.”

The Lion’s had more success in third, including Angel’s second home run, a single up the middle from Modern, and a run scored by Morgan McAlexander. The scale tipped to New Boston 5-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Lion’s tacked on two more runs. The first came off an RBI triple hit by Haley McAlexander that brought home Henderson, and the second came when Haley McAlexander stole home on a wild pitch.

The fifth stanza was a repeat of the fourth except it was Modern and Grace duffer bringing in the runs as a result of Hurst’s double.

The Eagles scored its second run in the top of the sixth when Meador knocked a double to center to bring in Madi Brown. New Diana’s final run came in the last inning; Becca Bates hit a double right to score Joelle Newton.

The Eagle’s hitting was led by Meador who finished with two doubles and an RBI. Becca Bates complemented with an RBI double, and Brooklynn Manes, Kylie Easterling, and Heather Look each had a single.

New Boston advances to the next round of playoffs to be played next week.
