Trump’s Tariffs

Is the president right to get tough with trading partners?

-

We have all heard a lot about President Donald Trump’s “trade war” with China, Europe and the other Americas.

The White House sees tariffs as a way to counter foreign competition often fueled by much cheaper labor costs. Opponents say a trade war will cost American jobs and force U.S. consumers to pay higher prices as other nations retaliate with tariff’s of their own.

Indeed, Mexico, Canada and the European Union have already imposed tariffs on some U.S. goods and China has announced trade agreements would be put in peril should tariffs actually be imposed on their exports to the U.S.

But supporters of the president’s plan say it’s about time a president got tough on foreign competition. and, they argue, it’s working. On Wednesday Bloomberg News reported the U.S. exports rose and trade deficit dropped to a seven-month low in April despite the tariff worries. But they also noted U.S. businesses were already reporting that higher prices for imports—particularly steel— were having an negative effect.

We want to know what you think. Do you support the way President Trump is addressing the trade situation? Or do you think a “trade war “is a bad strategy?

Last Week: Double Standard

Last week’s question was about ABC canceling Roseanne Barr’s TV show in the wake of a racially charged comment she made on Twitter. Her supporters say liberal celebrities get away with far worse. Do you believe there is a double standard? Or do you think there is a fundamental difference between what Roseanne said and what other TV celebrities say about President Trump?

Regardless of different political leanings, one is apt to spew vulgarities toward those with opposing beliefs, if they can’t control their baser nature. There is no fundamental difference between what Roseanne said, (that she was fired for), and what many on the left say—not only are they not fired, but praised. One example is the foul-mouthed Samantha Bee, who was honored by the “Television Academy” for her shows “contribution to social change.” — D.H.M., Texarkana, Ark.

A racist comment harkening back to the days of viewing a person as less than human due to the amount of melanin in their skin cannot be accepted. Commentary on Trump’s pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth along with his thousands of documented lies is fair. — J.W., Texarkana, Texas

If nothing else, Roseanne was selfish when she decided to Tweet. She only thought of herself. Now that her show has been dropped, a few hundred people lost their incomes. She tweeted something so controversial that it cost every one involved. Very selfish, in my opinion. — B.J., Texarkana, Texas

The Texarkana Gazette proved their double standard this past week by printing 444 lines and 2 pictures on Roseanne Barr and 71 lines and 0 pictures on Samantha Bee. Barr a tweet and Bee a pre-recorded show that could have been edited if the producers had wanted to.— D.S., Texarkana, Ark.

No. Comparing what Roseanne said about Jarrett to what TV celebrities say about President Trump is like comparing apples to oranges. After all the horrible names Trump called both his Republican opponents and his Democratic ones in 2016, he wants us to feel sorry for him when the mud he slings comes back at him? Ha! Trump’s campaign and his continued Twitter comments have exacerbated our country’s decline in civil discourse, which continues to this day. Sadly, he has emboldened racists and bigots .—B .R., Ashdown, Ark.

I haven’t seen any racist remarks towards Trump? Have you?

She is the reason why that her show was cancelled because of her vile and hurtful words. I would like to see a spinoff show created that centers around her onscreen kids with her being written off of the show. Double standard.

One comment was blatantly racist one wasn’t. The only double standard is the party of Trump. They invited the c-word spouting Ted Nugent to the WH. Double standard indeed.

Yes, there’s a double standard with the right to freedom of speech … but Trump is not involved because he’s never been a victim of racial slurs. The double standard lies in the different attitude toward black athletes exercising theirs to take a knee during the Anthem in order to peacefully protest unfair treatment by police vs. Roseanne Barr’s exercising hers to publicly attack others with racial slurs.

Who all remembers Barr deliberately screeching her way through the Anthem several years ago in an attempt to be funny, then grabbing her crotch & spitting (mimicking ball players)? Now Trump’s trying to pass her off as the most patriotic person in America.

Yes there is a big time double standard.

No if she had said something like that about our President they would kept the show but it was about a Democrat not a Republican. The View should be cancelled and Jimmy Fallon also.

It’s obvious. But if you disagree you’re racist, so …

Fire everyone on the view. Double standard for sure. Trump getting roasted on TV for his stupidity does not have anything to do with racially offensive statements.

I quit watching ABC along time ago.

Complete double standard. By the news media and liberals.
