HealthCARE Express to hold party for leadership academy

HealthCARE Express is launching the next session of its Klondike Leadership Academy with a party at 6 p.m. tonight at XLR8 on the Sportsplex campus, 5610 Richmond Road, Texarkana, Texas. Children will be creating dream boards and signing commitment sheets, setting them on track and already helping them earn points in the program.

There will also be an orientatio­n for parents so they know how to help their children through the KLA process.

Klondike Leadership Academy is a free leadership program for children focused on creating a legacy of leaders in the community. The program is for kids in kindergart­en through fifth grade. The program focuses on several core concepts including responsibi­lity, accountabi­lity and being active in the community, school or home.

There are seven skill sets for children focused on creating leaders: Yes I Can, Work Comes Before Play, Listen Before You Speak, Together is Better, Help to Inspire Others, Commitment, and Leaders are Readers.

Other activities offer throughout the summer include:

■ Reading a story at the park and painting their interpreta­tions of the story at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Spring Lake Park Pavilion, Texarkana, Texas.

■ Post-it with Love takes place at 6 p.m. June 27 at XLR8. Kids will write encouragin­g messages and distribute them in random acts of kindness around town.

Movies with a Purpose takes place at 9 a.m. July 9 at Cinemark 14 in Texarkana, Texas. They will have a photo shoot with the Klondike Bear and at 10 a.m. they will watch My Little Pony. After the movie they will choose a character from the movie and analyze how they felt about the film. The first 100 to RSVP will receive free child admission. ■ There will be food drive at 6 p.m. July 15 at Wal-Mart on Richmond Road, Texarkana, Texas.

■ Mentor week provides several opportunit­ies for children to learn about different careers they might be interested in when they get older.

■ From 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. July 18 they will be able to visit Silver Star Smokehouse and learn about owning a restaurant.

■ From noon to 1 p.m. July 19 they can learn about being a veterinari­an.

■ From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 20 can visit Texas A&M University.

■ From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 21 they can learn about holding public office at the Texarkana, Ark. Parks and Recreation office or from 11 a.m. to noon they will visit HealthCARE Express on Ark. ■ From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 kids will create their own storybooks at the Texarkana Regional Arts Center.

■ From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 there will be an event to kick-off school starting back at the Texas A&M Student Center. Children will create decorative and encouragin­g rock art to be distribute­d at local schools and other locations in the community.

Children earn points from attending events. The two children with the most points at the end of the year will win a Disney Cruise for themselves and one parent. Other prizes include parties, awards and more.
