Phil Sandoval baseball tournament starts today

The American Legion Guaranty Bank Texarkana Bulldogs host the Phil Sandoval memorial tournament today.

The late Texarkana Gazette sports writer Phil Sandoval loved baseball more than any other sport.

Sandoval began covering the American Legion Texarkana Tigers, who would later become the Bulldogs, in 2010. He passed away in July of 2014.

Eight teams will compete in the senior division, and eight teams will go head to head in the junior division.

The pool one senior division teams are the Texarkana Bulldogs, the Burk Burnett Black Socks, the Colt 45’s, and the Post 8 Cannoneers. The Farmers Bank Texarkana Razorbacks, Camden Pulpwood, Renegades and Ada Braves are in pool two.

Each team will play three games with the pool winner and runner-up of each pool advancing to single eliminatio­n on Sunday.

At George Dobson Field today, the Bulldogs take on the Cannoneers at 6:05 p.m, followed by Burk Burnett and the Colt 45’s at 8:10.

The Renegades take on Camden at Joe Blagg Field today at 6:05 p.m., while the Razorbacks tangle with Ada at 8:10.

Four games will be played in the senior division on Saturday at George Dobson Field. The first game pits the Bulldogs against the Colt 45’s at 9 a.m., followed by the Ada Braves facing off against Camden at 11:05. The third game features the Renegades against the Braves at 3:15 p.m. and the last game will be the Bulldogs and Burk Burnett at 5:20.

There will be four games in the senior division on Saturday at Joe Blagg Field. The Razorbacks tussle with the Renegades at 11:05 p.m., Burk Burnett goes up against he Cannoneers at 1:10, the Razorbacks face down Camden at 3:15, and the Colt 45’s play the Cannoneers at 5:20.

Sunday’s semifinal senior games will be at George Dobson Field at 9 a.m. and at 11:15. The championsh­ip game is slated for 4:40.

In pool one of the junior division are the Junior Bulldogs, Liberty-Eylau, the Ada A’s, and the NET Prospects, while the Junior Razorbacks, Camden 17u, Titans 17u, and Hamburg Mudcats comprise pool two.

Today’s junior games feature the

Junior Bulldogs and the NET Prospects at 4 p.m. on George Dobson Field, the Junior Razorbacks and the Titans at 4 p.m. on Joe Blagg Field, Camden and the Mudcats at 4 p.m. followed by Liberty-Eylau and the A’s at 6:05, both at H.E. Markham Park.

Seven junior games are slated for Saturday. At George Dobson, the Junior Bulldogs face the A’s at 1:10, and the A’s tangle with the NET Prospects at 7 p.m. The Junior Razorbacks tangle with the Mudcats at 9 a.m. at Joe Blagg Field.

Five junior games will be played at H.E. Markham Park on Saturday. Camden takes on the Titans at 9 a.m., followed by Liberty-Eylau and the NET Prospects at 11:05, the Junior Razorbacks and Camden at 1:10, the Titans and Mudcats at 3:15, and finally the Junior Bulldogs and Liberty-Eylau at 5:20.

The junior semifinals will be at H.E. Markham Park on Sunday with games at 9 a.m. and 11:15. The junior championsh­ip game is Sunday at 2:20 p.m. at George Dobson Field.
