Bedbugs shut down local hotel
The Wyndham Garden Hotel in Texarkana, Texas, was shut down Tuesday afternoon for having a bed-gug “infestation issue,” a city spokeswoman said.
Enforcement action was taken concerning the hotel on North Stateline Avenue around noon Tuesday, said Lisa Thompson, the city’s public information officer.
Violations were documented last week after inspections were conducted based on complaints received, she said.
Property owners were asked to discontinue use of infested rooms until a reinspection could occur, but over the weekend the infested rooms were rented out, prompting the building official to require the owner to cease operations.
Guests were asked to relocate.
“The health and safety of our residents and visitors to Texarkana is of paramount importance to us,” Thompson said. “We want to ensure that all our businesses are operating to the health and safety standards outlined in our code and expected by our Code Enforcement officers. While this may be inconvenient for customers, the public’s well being is our priority.”
City inspectors will work with the property owners to ensure code compliance before the business is reopened.
The owners of the property were not available for comment.
In August 2013, the hotel opened under the Wyndham banner after a $5 million renovation. The six-floor hotel has a 5,000-square-foot banquet room, a bar and restaurant.
Before that time, the hotel had operated under the Clarion and Sheraton names.
