MANNA KITCHEN: Nonprofit feeds seniors, disabled in area.

- By Lori Dunn

Canned food is worth its weight in gold at the Manna Kitchen in New Boston.

“We feed between 60 and 80 people a day and when I have to open green beans to make green bean casserole, I open a lot of cans,” said Director Marci Conley. “We really need the large sized cans. Large cans are my friend,” she said.

Manna Kitchen, which is operated by Chapel of Light Church in New Boston, is a nonprofit organization that serves meals to senior citizens and disabled people in New Boston and DeKalb area. Conley has been with Manna Kitchen since November 2014.

“We cook Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s for a total of 1000 plus meals each week and the staff is all volunteer work,” Conley said.

All of the food is made from scratch. The meal portions are not huge but they are meant to supplement the person’s meal and not be their primary food source.

“We do not take federal funding but are solely supported by the local churches and individuals of Bowie county,” she said.

However, Manna Kitchen is running very low on canned good this summer.

“We are in desperate need of staples,” Conley said. A list of items the group could use include:

■ Beans of any kind

■ Mixed vegetables

■ Peas

■ Carrots

■ Cream of chicken and mushroom soups

■ Pastas of any kind

■ Canned tuna

■ Fresh or frozen meats Manna Kitchen is at 301 N. Center St. in New Boston. For more information, visit its Facebook page or GoFundMe page. The group will also take monetary donations.
