Whitehouse rallies from behind by 8 to defeat PG

- By Brian Tyl

They made their escape in the fourth set, just when things looked bad.

Whitehouse came from eight points down in the fourth set and defeated Pleasant Grove, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23, at Hawk Gym on Tuesday.

The Lady Cats went up two sets to one going into the fourth, and came back from a big deficit to claim the win.

“When I called a timeout in the fourth, I told the girls that their faces reflected that we were down in the set,” Lady Hawks’ head coach Amy Collvins said. “We should have capitalized more on our lead, but it is early in the season.”

Grace Pickelman served in four points to put the Hawks up 11-6. During her time at the line, Georgia Cobb hammered down a pair of kills.

Natalie Hale’s kill later in the fourth led to a 17-9 edge for Pleasant Grove. But Whitehouse’s Ashlee Taylor delivered four serves in a row as the Hawks’ lead shrank, 22-21.

Katie Ferguson hit a well-placed tip for a winner to make it 23-21 for the Hawks, but the Lady Cats’ Kaitlyn Wood got the serve at 23-22 and served in three straight to give Whitehouse the victory.

“We had good moments in all aspects of the match. We just have to put it all together,” Collvins said.

Macey Adams had 12 service points for PG, Cobb totaled 13 kills, and Kaylee Kelly had 12 assists. Ferguson added eight kills, Sydney Hopkins made 15 digs, while Pickelman had nine digs.

The first set featured six ties at 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 15-all until the Hawks rattled off seven straight points to take a 19-15 lead. Pleasant Grove would never trail again in the set.

After Pickelman fired in a kill, Adams served in six consecutive points to give the Hawks a four-point lead. During her serve, Adams caused three serve-receive errors, Katie Ferguson put down a kill, and Pickelman added a pair of winners.

Whitehouse built an early fivepoint lead and later extended it to eight, 18-10. PG could not get back on track and committed 13 unforced errors, including four service errors as the Lady Cats took the second set to even it up at one set each.

Kate Idrogo served in four points to give Whitehouse an 8-3 edge in the third set. The Hawks tried to get back in it when Ferguson and Rachel Leach combined for a block to bring Pleasant Grove to within two, 9-7.

But the Lady Cats put together a five-point rally as Hannah House served four straight to take a commanding 21-12 lead.

The Hawks, who committed nine unforced errors in the set, failed to recover and Whitehouse took a 2-1 edge going into the fourth.
