Lady Hawks go 1-1 in tourney

- By Brian Tyl

All is well that ends well. Pleasant Grove finished the night off with a dramatic 21-25, 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-10 win over Prairiland in a three-team, round-robin tournament on Tuesday at Hawk Gym.

The Lady Hawks dropped their first match to Whitehouse, the tournament winner, and finished at 1-1 on the day.

“We had good moments in all aspects of the game in both of our matches,” Pleasant Grove head coach Amy Collvins said. “We showed some growth and played smarter against Prairiland. Against good teams, we can’t have as many errors as we did. They grew from one match to the other and that is all I can ask for.”

Whitehouse defeated the Hawks, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23, and posted a win against the Lady Patriots, 23-25, 25-11, 25-23, 19-25, 15-13, in the second match of the day.

Whitehouse 3, Pleasant Grove 1

Whitehouse came from eight points down in the fourth set and defeated Pleasant Grove.

The Lady Cats, who went 2-0 in the round robin, went up two sets to one going into the fourth, and came

back from a big deficit to claim the win.

“We should have capitalized more on our lead in the fourth set, but it is early in the season,” Collvins said.

Grace Pickelman served in four points to put the Hawks up 11-6. During her time at the line, Georgia Cobb hammered down a pair of kills.

Natalie Hale’s kill later in the fourth led to a 17-9 edge for Pleasant Grove. But Whitehouse’s Ashlee Taylor delivered four serves in a row as the Hawks’ lead shrank to a point, 22-21.

Katie Ferguson hit a wellplaced tip for a winner to make it 23-21 for the Hawks, but the Lady Cats’ Kaitlyn Wood got the serve at 23-22 and served in three straight to give Whitehouse the victory.

Macey Adams had 12 service points for PG, Cobb totaled 13 kills, and Kaylee Kelly had 12 assists. Ferguson added eight kills, Sydney Hopkins made 15 digs, while Pickelman had nine digs.

The first set featured six ties at 1,4,5,6,7, and 15-all until the Hawks rattled off seven straight points to take a 19-15 lead.

Pleasant Grove would never trail again in the set.

After Pickelman fired in a kill, Adams served in six consecutive points to give the Hawks a fourpoint lead. During her serve, Adams caused three serve-receive errors, Katie Ferguson put down a kill, and Pickelman added a pair of winners.

Whitehouse built an early fivepoint lead and later extended it to eight, 18-10. PG could not get back on track as the Lady Cats took the second set.

The Hawks tried to get back in the third set after Whitehouse took an 8-3 lead. Ferguson and Rachel Leach combined for a block to bring Pleasant Grove to within two, 9-7.

But the Lady Cats put together a five-point rally as Hannah House served four straight to take a commanding 21-12 lead.

The Hawks, who committed nine unforced errors in the set, failed to recover and Whitehouse took a 2-1 edge going into the fourth.

Pleasant Grove 3, Prairiland 2

The Hawks bounced back after a first match loss and defeated the Patriots in epic fashion.

In set one, Hale put down a kill to give PG the serve down 23-15 lead. Hale then served in six straight to put the Hawks in striking distance, down by two, 23-21. But the Patriots put down a kill and had a block to end the set.

Set two went back and forth. The set featured eight ties at 3, 4, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25-all.

Madi Morris put down a clutch kill to give the Hawks the serve up by one, 26-25. Cobb fired in a winner that Prairiland couldn’t handle for the set clincher, 27-25.

Much like the second set, the third set was like a teeter-totter. Both teams played with high energy and effort, resulting in 10 ties during the set at 2,3,4,5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 21, and 22-all.

Prairiland earned the serve at 22-22, and the Hawks had three unforced errors to give the Patriots a 25-22 victory.

PG controlled the fourth set at the most vital time: the end part. Adams fired in a kill to give the Hawks a 21-19 lead and teammate Kelly took the serve.

Kelly rifled in four straight points, which ended in a set-clinching, Rachael Leach tip to give PG a 25-19 win.

The fifth set was competitive up until when the Hawks broke an 8-all tie. After PG took the lead at 9-8, they never looked back.

Hale walloped a match-clinching kill down the right base line at match point to give the Hawks the 15-10 set win.
