New THS principal eager to start school year

-

Texas High School’s new principal says she’s excited to start the 201819 in the school’s top position. Carla Dupree , who was hired in 2017, was named principal in June.

“I ’m extremely honored to be in this position,” she said. “I served one year on the campus. I joined last year as the assistant principal of curriculum and instruction and just immediately fell in love with the campus, staff, the students, the traditions of Texas High, the pride of Texas High.”

She said the school will have many good things happening in the hallways, from extracurricular activities to academics.

“My primary goal this year is to set my teachers up for success so they can set our students up for success,” she said. “There’s no reason to have any student here not involved in something. I want students to find their passion and then I want to help them to grow their excellence in whatever their area is. Those are my primary goals.”

Dupree worked for many years in Queen City Independent School District, serving as both a teacher and elementary and secondary principal. She received a bachelor of arts degree in English/ speech communications from Stephen F. Austin State University and holds a master of science degree in education from Texas A&M University-Commerce, along with principal certification.

The new principal said she met with the president and vice president of the student council last week and they discussed how they could effectively work together. The student council’s theme is “Unite to Ignite” and the school’s theme is “Lead, Achieve, Succeed.” Dupree said the themes will work together to help promote student achievement and success.

“Their ‘Unite to Ignite’ is about everybody finding their strength, coming together to find their own individual strengths and becoming part of a bigger whole,” she said. “With the ‘Lead, Achieve, Succeed’, basically we’re all leaders. It went well together and complemented each other. We’re going to work together throughout this year campus-wide to make sure everybody finds their niche and goes for it.”

She’s also discussed school safety with members of the TISD police department and said they talked about how better communication between the entities, administration and students can help better prepare them for any potential events.

“The key is communication,” she said. “We want student input, as well, after a drill. We can see our perception of how it went, but we want to get some feedback from various students so that we can know how they feel and what we can do better. We’re going to meet periodically throughout the year and discuss those things.”
