TC board to hold public hearing on tax rate

- By Jennifer Middleton

Texarkana College’s Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday in the Patman Room at the Truman Arnold Student Center, 2500 N. Robison Road, Texarkana, Texas.

The board will hold a public hearing on the 2018-19 tax rate and consider a resolution for an economic development incentive with Arconic Inc.

The tax rate of $.118115 will remain the same. A second public hearing will be held Aug. 20, and the tax rate will be adopted Aug. 27.

For the Arconic resolution, the board will consider taking 25 percent of new tax revenue the college would receive as a result of the recent $14 million investment in the facility and putting it in a fund to be used for employee training. The customized training for the company’s employees would be facilitated through TC’s Business and Community Education Division. The agreement, which would be for five years, would generate around $15,000.

TC President James Henry Russell said they will also work with the Texas Workforce Commission to get a skills development grant for additional employee training.

“The main thing we’re so excited about are those new jobs in this area at a time when we need new jobs,” he said. “They are good paying jobs, and Arconic is a good community partner.”

Arconic estimates they will add 35 jobs to the 89 current positions at the Nash location.
