Deadline nearing for Texas-side candidates

Time is running out to file as a candidate for city office in this year’s elections.

In Texarkana, Ark., the filing deadline to appear on the general election ballot in November is noon Friday. In Texarkana, Texas, the deadline is 5 p.m. Monday.

Arkansas-side voters will elect a mayor and Board of Directors members from Ward 3, Ward 4 and Ward 5.

To qualify, a candidate must be a registered voter at least 21 years old who has been a resident of the city for 30 days. Mayoral candidates must live within the city limits, and Board of Directors candidates must live in their designated wards.

Each candidate must file with the city clerk a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters who live in the city, as well as a statement of financial interest. There is no filing fee.

On the Texas side, voters will elect a mayor and City Council members from Ward 1, Ward 4 and Ward 6.

Candidates must be registered voters to qualify. Mayoral candidates must have lived in the city for 12 months, and council candidates in their designated wards for six months, before Election Day.

Each candidate must file with the city secretary an applicatio­n form and Campaign Treasurer Appointmen­t form. There is no filing fee.
