Lady Tigers sweep PG

- By Brian Tyl

Treyaunna Rush put down a match-high 19 kills, made eight digs, nine assists and three blocks as the Lady Tigers swept Pleasant Grove, 25-13, 25-14, 25-22, at the Tiger Center on Tuesday in a crosstown rivalry volleyball match.

“I think the girls played a really good match,” Texas High head coach Melissa Hardy said. “That was one of the best matches we have played so far. There is always a little extra excitement when we play Pleasant Grove. We served aggressively and better than we did this past weekend. Our serve-receive was awesome.”

Despite the loss, Lady Hawk head coach Amy Collvins was pleased with her team’s performance.

“I am really proud of them,” Collvins said. “We kept our momentum up and kept our emotions in check. We worked for every point as if it was the last one of the match; that made us better. We’re going to get better any time we play that kind of high-caliber team.”

Katelyn Jordan took to the server’s line with Texas High up, 14-9. Jordan slapped in five consecutive points to pad the Tigers’ lead, 19-9. During the rally, Rush had a pair of kills and Ashlyn Stiger made a block at the net. The set ended on a Hawk service error.

The second set was much like the first, with Texas High take a 12-8 lead when Mia Wilson took serve. Kaitlyn Cross powered down a kill and had a block during Wilson’s service. Pleasant Grove made two unforced errors, and the Tigers were up by eight points.

Oddly enough, the second set ended on a Hawk serve that went long.

Pleasant Grove made more adjustments and kept the lead for a while early in the third set.

Racheal Leach put down a kill for the Hawks to knot it at 1-all. Sydney Hopkins served in three straight points to make it 4-1.

The set went back and forth with the teams trading single points until Pleasant Grove earned two in a row when Georgia Cobb fired a kill down the left baseline, and Grace Pickelman caused a serve-receive error. The score went to 14-10 in favor of the Hawks.

But Texas High responded with three consecutive to inch back into it, down by one, 14-13. The next point went to the Hawks, but Olivia Lower smacked a kill down the left baseline to give serve to the Tigers.

Cross took to the service line and four consecutive points were scored to give Texas High its second lead of the set, 18-16. PG recovered to knot it at 22-all, but the Tigers finished out the most competitive set of the evening, 25-22.

Jordan made 19 assists and had 13 service points, Cross had six kills, seven blocks and 11 service points, and Lower made 13 digs to go with 13 service points for Texas High.

Willis led all servers with 14 points and added nine digs for the Tigers.

Cobb and Katie Ferguson each had five kills for the Hawks, Kaylee Kelley had six assists, and Sydney Hopkins slapped in seven service points and made 10 digs.

Hallie Lipham served in 15 points to lead Pleasant Grove’s junior varsity to a 25-23, 25-12, sweep over Texas High. Lauren Allred paced the Tigers with eight service points.

Lucy Woodman slapped in eight points as the Hawks’ 9th grade swept Texas High, 25-17, 25-23. Vanessa Perez had 10 service points for the Tigers.
