Brahmas blank Lions to open season, 26-0

- By Grant Minor

NEW BOSTON, Texas— Paul Pewitt shut out New Boston, 26-0, on Friday night at the season opener.

Both teams entered the contest under the guidance of new head coaches and it was Triston Abron of the Brahmas that put the first win under his belt. Last year Paul Pewitt finished its season 5-6.

Cross Holder took point for the Brahmas and led the offense with 110 yards rushing on fifteen carries and one touchdown. The Brahmas finished with 372 rushing yards on 46 carries and didn’t attempt a pass.

The Lions struggled in the first half against the Brahma’s run game.

Paul Pewitt carried the ball 22 times in the first two quarters for 189 yards. DJ Turner led the Brahma’s first half attack with three carries for 50 yards and two touchdowns; the first was from 11 yards out, and the second was a 26 yard swing to the right.

New Boston’s Kevon Thompson covered 45 yards in the first half on nine carries to lead all New Boston rushers.

The Lion’s opening drive was snuffed out after a fourth-and-five fell short.

Paul Pewit took over and scored on their opening drive, going 65 yards in five plays. The scoring play was a 33-yard trot by quarterback Holder down to the left sideline, 6-0 Paul Pewitt after the failed pass conversion.

After a four-and-out the Lion’s were forced to surrender possession once again to the Brahmas.

Paul Pewitt’s second drive of the opening stanza was also successful, culminating to an 11 yard run by Turner for 6. Holder’s pass to Turner was good to make it 14-0.

In the third quarter, after forcing New Boston to punt for the second time, the Brahmas started their third drive with great field position after a face mask penalty was tacked on to the end of La-Jathan Allen’s 22 yard run.

Ten plays later, Turner claimed his second TD, a 26-yard bolt up the middle to extend Paul Pewit’s lead to 20 with 0:35 left in the first half.

New Boston held back the Brahmas in the second half, only giving up six points and forcing the only fumble of the game which the Lion’s recovered.

The final score of the game came early in the third frame, a 12-yard run by Allen.

The Lion’s following drive put them in the red zone with an opportunity to score, but a well placed pass by Tyler Strain was batted away at the last moment to dash New Boston’s momentum and secure the game for Paul Pewitt. Paul Pewitt 14 6 6 0 — 26 New Boston 0000— 0 First Quarter
