- By Karl Richter

A large crowd is expected downtown today as Texarkana welcomes the governors of Arkansas and Texas.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will speak at an event launching AR-TX Regional Economic Development Incorporation.

The event will serve as an introduction to AR-TX REDI, a high-profile new organization that aims to play a coordinating role in bringing businesses and jobs to both sides of the state line.

Former Arkansas State Rep. Mary P. “Prissy” Hickerson,

Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp and AR-TX REDI Board President Sonja Yates Hubbard are also slated to speak. Local high school bands and color guards will provide entertainment.

For security, streets around the downtown courthouse and post office will be barricaded until about 4:30 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to use larger parking lots nearby, which may require a short walk. Texarkana, Ark., Police Department asks people to avoid parking vehicles where they block streets or in areas not designed for parking.

Hot temperatures and a chance of rain are forecast. Hydration stations will be in two spots, at Fifth and Olive streets and near the entrance to the Arrow Bar at East Fifth and Wood streets. If there is rain, the event will be moved to the first-floor lobby of the Bi-State Justice Building.

The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the downtown courthouse and post office, 500 N. State Line Ave.
