Colorful 5K will be held Sept. 22 at Trinity Baptist

- By Ashley Gardner

CASA of Texarkana’s sixth annual Amanda Fussell Woodman Memorial Colorful 5K takes place Sept. 22 at Trinity Baptist Church’s cross county trail.

The children’s competitive run for ages 5 t0 11 begins at 8:30 a.m., and the adult competitive run for ages 12 and older begins at 9 a.m. Late registration is available at 8 a.m.

Everyone is invited to wear their favorite super hero costume to the 5k.

The cost to participate is $35 for adults and $15 for children 5 to 12. For teams of 10 or more the cost to participate is $10 per person.

Proceeds from the event will support the Children’s Advocacy Center, which helps investigate cases of child abuse with a multidisciplinary team approach. Counseling and medical exams are offered on-site in the center’s comfortable, home-like setting.

“Last year we raised around $38,000 and we’re hoping to raise around that much this year but we have ground to make up,” said Stephanie Fussell, CASA development director. “If you can’t participate, you can still donate- $5 is just as important as $35. It all adds up so if you can’t come please donate for a good cause.”

The colorful 5k is a fun event for kids and families. Participants receive a packet of colored powder to start the race out with. There will also be 10 powder stations throughout the course of the race.

“This event is special because it’s for children and families and that’s what CASA is all about,” Fussell said.

Other activities available during the event will include a bounce house, washable tattoos, a magician making balloon characters, snow cones, food from Super 1 Foods and an obstacle course for the children.

The event serves the dual purpose to educate the community about child abuse.

“Every four seconds a child is abused and only 40 percent of those are reported,” Fussell said. “This event is an opportunity for us to talk to the public about what CASA does.”

Color packets can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 20 & 21 at the CASA office, 1201 Main St., Texarkana, Texas.

The run is dedicated to Amanda Fussell Woodman for her many years of tireless dedication to CASA and its’ programs for the abused and neglected children in our community who are unable to speak for themselves.
