Mustangs gallop past Arp, 46-6, on Friday to kick off 2-0 start

ARP, Texas—Bryce Johnston rushed for three touchdowns, Devin Flournoy added a couple of TD runs for the Mustangs and Hughes Springs moved to 2-0 on the young football season with a 46-6 win over Arp in varsity football action Friday night.

Johnston scored on runs of one and 38 yards in the first half and added a 4-yard run in the third quarter for the Mustangs. Trayvon Kennedy added a 2-yard TD run and Flournoy had a 25-yard TD run in the second stanza as the Mustangs built a 25-0 halftime lead.

In the third, Flournoy had a 1-yard run, and the Mustangs closed out their scoring with an 8-yard TD run by Tyson Daigle in the fourth.

Arp’s Jordan Wright tossed a 51-yard TD pass to Caleb Wright with 2:22 to play to end the scoring.

Hughes Springs will host Waskom on Thursday. Arp visits Jefferson on Friday.

Linden-Kildare 62, Clarksvill­e 19

LINDEN, Texas—LindenKild­are erupted for 31 second-quarter points to knock off Clarksvill­e, 62-19, in a non-district contest on the Tigers’ home field.

LaDavion Johnson paced the Tigers (2-0), who built a commanding 37-0 halftime lead, with 150 yards on 12 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Two came on runs of 5 and 39 yards and the third on an 85-yard intercepti­on return. He also had a 2-point conversion run.

L-K’s Ty Patterson also scored three TDs for the hosts, two on defense. He returned an intercepti­on 90 yards and returned a fumble 30 yards to paydirt. His other score came when he hauled in an 18-yard pass from quarterbac­k Jacob Owen.

Owens added a pair of touchdowns on a 1-yard sneak and a 4-yard run. L-K’s other score came on a 21-yard pass from Mason Johnson to an unidentifi­ed receiver.

The Blue Tigers (1-1) got a pair of touchdown passes from Quay Scales, the first to Deontae Ricks (63 yards) and the second to Tra’Derrian Rose (38). Ricks also returned a kickoff 63 yards for another Clarksvill­e TD.

Linden-Kildare had 321 yards total offense while the visiting Tigers had 310. L-K’s defense forced five turnovers (three intercepti­ons, two fumbles) while Clarksvill­e came up with two turnovers (one intercepti­on, one fumble).

Gladewater 37, Atlanta 20

GLADEWATER, Texas— Eligia Carter rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns, Rashaud Johnson added three rushing TDs, and the Gladewater Bears moved to 2-0 with a 37-20 win over Atlanta.

The loss drops Atlanta to

0-2.

Carter put Gladewater on the board early with a 40-yard touchdown run just 1:40 into the contest, and Johnson got into the scoring act with 52 seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a 1-yard run.

Atlanta got on the board with 9:16 left in the second quarter when Andrew Samples tossed a 34-yard scoring strike to Joshua Edwards, but the Bears took over from there.

Carter plowed in from 15 yards out with 3:07 to play in the half, and then after a Christian Holmes intercepti­on, Justice Hasseck booted a 25-yard field goal as time expired to give Gladewater a 23-7 halftime lead.

Johnson’s scoring runs of 1 yard in the third and 3-yards in the fourth put things away for the Bears.

Samples did help Atlanta keep it close late, throwing a 42-yard TD pass to Farron Hall with 3:00 remaining and adding a 3-yard run with just 13 seconds showing on the clock.

Atlanta entertains Pleasant Grove and Gladewater hosts Center next week.

Paul Pewitt 23, Hooks 20

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas—Keiuntray Hawkins scored a 27-yard touchdown with 27 seconds left in the game as Paul Pewitt sneaked out with a 23-20 win over Hooks.

The Brahmas had a good night running the football, racking up 269 total yards on the ground, while the Hornets picked up 175 yards in the air along with 157 yards on the ground.

LaJathan Allen grabbed an 11-yard pass from Cross Holder for the Brahmas’ first score in the second quarter.

Mason Vasquez ran the ball in from 5 yards out for Hooks to knot it at 7-all.

Holder plunged in on 1-yard plunge to give Pewitt a 13-7 halftime lead.

Slate Ruth caught a 7-yard pass from Connor Price for a Hornet touchdown, but the kick failed. The game remained tied 13-13 until the Brahmas’ Cross Holder kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Vasquez scored on a 4-yard run and the PAT was good to give Hooks a 20-16 lead with over seven minutes remaining in the game.

James Bowie 14, Harleton 7

HARLETON, Texas—The visiting Pirates defeated the Wildcats in a close game.

James Bowie scored the winning touchdown with 4:11 seconds left in the final quarter on a 43-yard pass from Duncan Hammonds to Evan Barron.

The Wildcats’ defense got the party started in the first quarter with Justin Davidson returning a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown.

The Pirates responded with 14 unanswered points beginning in the second quarter with a 15-yard run by Zack Cooper. James Bowie’s defense had a solid outing, holding the Wildcats to 89 total yards and creating two turnovers.
