L-E hosts Tigers for homecoming

- By Josh Richert Sports Editor

Liberty-Eylau wants to win homecoming, especially against intra-city rival Texas High tonight.

However, the Leopards have bigger goals they’re looking at as they play Game 3 and the second of a threegame homestand.

“Like I told our players, trust the process,” LibertyEylau head coach Steve Wells said. “We know we have a really tough preseason schedule, everybody knew that going in. Our goal is to get better each week and reap the rewards when district rolls around. That’s what it all boils down to. Nobody remembers what you did in September, when you win in November and December.

“We have to trust the process

Texas High Liberty-Eylau and understand we’re playing some really good teams. We need to get better each week, and if we do that it will all work out in the end.”

The Leopards (0-2) fell to Carthage, 42-28, last week after the game was tied 7-all at halftime.

The Tigers (1-1) evened their record with a 43-35 win over Arkansas High, rallying from a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter.

“This is a really similar L-E team as what they historically have been: athletically, one of the more talented teams in the state, always possess the ability to make big plays with the speed they have on the field, and they have two of the best linebackers we’ll see all year long,” Texas High head coach Gerry Stanford said. “They’re a very physical team, and they run to the ball very well, defensively and offensively.

“They’ve got guys at all positions who can play, starting at quarterback with Isaiah Cross.”

El-Amin Greer is leading the Leopards wideouts with five catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Cedric Dickerson has four catches for 72 yards and a score this season, while Deshun Dickerson has snagged four passes for 63 yards.

Deandre Brown is leading the Tiger defense with 13 total tackles. Kobe Webster is leading the Texas High offense with four receptions for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tigers defeated the Leopards last season at Tiger Stadium at Grim Park, 37-23.

“Texas High, traditionally, is really tough, and they beat a really good Arkansas High team last week,” Wells said. “We’ve got to be mentally and physically ready, and come ready to come play a really good ballgame. One thing we’ll be harping on is taking care of the football.

“We had some good performances last week; the main thing is we’ve got to eliminate turnovers and play defense like we did the first half against Carthage. We’re trying to develop some depth on our roster, so we’re not as fatigued in the third and fourth quarters.”

The game will be broadcast on KTXK 91.5 FM (THS) and KTFS 940 AM and 98.7 FM (L-E).
