Lady Backs prevail

Arkansas High sweeps past Lady War Eagles

Arkansas High made short work of J.A. Fair.

Jamyia Montgomery slapped in 13 service points to lead the Lady Backs to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-10, sweep over the Lady War Eagles.

“We didn’t play very well in the first two sets but did better in the third,” Arkansas High head coach Kelsey Jackson said. “We were too complacent in the first two but were more aggressive in the third. We have to play our game.”

Kaitlyn Fortenberr­y hustled all over the court and straighten­ed out many wayward shots for the Lady Backs. Fortenberr­y finished with nine service points, 11 assists, and 13 digs.

“Kaitlyn is a good volleyball player and is scrappy,” Jackson said. “She is one of the leaders on the court.”

Kasey Duncan—who finished with nine service points, nine kills and nine digs—served in four straight points to give Arkansas High a 9-2 lead in the first set. During her service, Duncan caused two serve-receive errors and had an ace.

The first set ended when the Lady Backs’ Fortunate Barry caused a serve-receive error. Barry contribute­d 10 digs in the match.

Montgomery slapped in four consecutiv­e points to put Arkansas High up 13-7 in the second set. The War Eagles committed three hitting errors as the Lady Backs grabbed a 19-12 lead.

J.A. Fair put together a little rally to close within two points, 23-21. But after Sydney Blackwell hit a tip that went for a winner, Montgomery caused a serve-receive error to clinch the set for the Lady Backs.

The third set featured more of Montgomery’s serving. She took the serve with Arkansas High up 9-6 and rifled in nine points in a row to give the Lady Backs an 18-6 lead. During her service, the War Eagles had four hitting errors and four serve-receive errors.

J.A. Fair never recovered after AHS built the 12-point lead.

Duncan took the serve at match point for the Lady Backs and caused a serve-receive error for the win.

The War Eagles committed 59 unforced errors, while Arkansas High had 32.

Blackwell had eight kills for the Lady Backs, and teammate Jayda Griffin had eight kills and 10 digs.

Nia Stuckey served in nine points and teammate Alyssa Young had eight as Arkansas High’s junior varsity swept the War Eagles, 25-11, 25-9.
