Fishing fundraiser starts Friday
The ninth annual Jacob “Dude” Turner Memorial Scholarship Team Catfish Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28 to 29, at Rocky Point Pavilion on Wright Patman Lake.
Trot-Jug Line Division fishing begins tonight at 5 p.m. Rod and Reel Division fishing is 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Entry and more fishing information is available at 903-824-8835.
The tournament is a memorial fundraiser in honor of Jacob Turner of Linden, who died in an automobile accident while crossing the Sulphur River on his way to work in the early morning hours in January 2010, his father J.G. Turner said.
Money raised is used to support such service activities as scholarships for students, teacher grants, the Cass County Championship Rodeo, programs at Linden-Kildare High School, the 4-State Cystic Fibrosis Coon Hunt and the Big Bird Crawfish Boil, which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A hamburger supper 5 p.m. Friday and a fish fry 5 p.m Saturday are two scheduled events as well as an auction Saturday night.
“We’ll have big auction after the fish fry on Saturday night, and we certainly encourage the public to come and support us,” Turner said.
“We ‘re also selling tickets for a drawing that will award two .38 hammerless special Smith & Wesson handguns, one for a woman and one for a man.
These tickets are available at Lakewood Grocery on the road to Wright Patman Lake or by calling me at 903-824-8835.”
Turner added that tournament is a big undertaking each year, but that it succeeds because of support from the community and especially the family and friends of the honoree.
