Horatio keys in on conference schedule

- By Earl Gill

HORATIO, Ark.—Horatio is rolling.

The Lions (2-2, 1-0) are locked in at the midway point through 2018.

“It feels good to be undefeated in conference heading into the second week,” head coach Robert Collum said. “We play Smackover this week and they’re a very athletic team. We can’t be concerned with what they do on offense and defense; the only thing we should be concerned about is what we can do.”

Through four games this season, the Lions have given up 81 points (20.3 points per game), while scoring 80 points (20.0 points per game). “Our approach this week to practice has been like any other week,” Collum said. “We’ll control what we can control and try to get better.”

Senior Trey Pickett has completed 6 of 14 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. He also has rushed 63 times for 159 yard and four touchdowns.

“Trey is doing a great job of making the correct reads for us this season,” Collum said. “Other than the speed aspect, Trey has come in and done everything we’ve asked of him this season.”

Senior Kelton Turner is the catalyst for the Lions offense. Turner has rushed 59 times for 359 yards and two touchdowns for Horatio.

“We get good work out of Kelton every week,” Collum said. “He went through some issues for about two weeks where he was putting the ball on the ground, but

we got that corrected. It just makes him a better fullback, taking care of the ball and doing what he needs to do to make this offense go.”

Collum credits the offensive line with his team’s rushing success early in the season.

“Our guys are going both ways on account of our numbers,” Collum said. “They have to play offense, defense and special teams normally. They’re typically tired and worn out by the end of the game.

“That’s when you see the injuries begin to creep in there towards the end of the game. Something as simple as a sprained ankle and those injuries are beginning to catch up to us a little bit. We have to make sure we take care of our guys and limit the number of possessions the other team has on offense.”

The Lions travel to Smackover on Friday, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
