CARTHAGE, Texas— Gunner Capps threw for 421 yards on 21-of-30 passing as Carthage scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to defeat Pleasant Grove, 28-21.
Bruce Garrett, who finished with 69 yards rushing on 11 carries, scored the Hawks’ first touchdown from 4 yards out to tie the game at 7-all early in the second quarter.
James Wiggins, who led Pleasant Grove in rushing with 136 yards on 19 totes, scored a 33-yard touchdown late in the second period as the Hawks took a 14-13 lead into halftime.
Pleasant Grove quarterback Ben Harmon plunged into the end zone from a yard out to give the Hawks a 21-13 lead going into the final quarter.
The Bulldogs scored on a 9-yard pass and completed the 2-point conversion to knot the game at 21-all in the fourth quarter.
The Hawks drove down to Carthage’s 30-yard line, but the Bulldogs recovered a fumble with 1:58 remaining in the game.
Capps went 5 for 7 passing on the ensuing drive that took Carthage down to Pleasant Grove’s 12-yard line.
With 11 seconds left, the Bulldogs ran in a 12-yard touchdown in what would be the game clincher.
Carthage, which has won six state championships in the past 10 years, improves to 5-0, while the defending Class 4A, Division II state champion Hawks fall to 4-2.
