Police investigate fatal shooting

-

Texarkana, Texas, police are still investigating a shooting early Saturday morning that left a 40-yearold Texas-side man injured in the 800 block of Bowie Street before he eventually died.

Police arrived at the scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. after being dispatched there regarding a reported robbery attempt at a residence, according to a prepared statement released Saturday by the Police Department.

Before arriving, the officers had been advised by dispatch that the caller indicated he shot someone who had been trying to rob him.

Upon arrival, officers met with Joseph Walker, 32, who lived at the home where dispatch had sent them, and there they also found Rodney Richardson, 40, suf-

fering from several gunshot wounds and lying on the ground near the porch.

During the preliminary investigation, the report states that Walker told officers he parked his vehicle in his front yard and started walking to his house, at which time Richardson began to walk toward Walker, requesting a ride. Walker then told police that since he didn’t know Richardson, he refused. Walker told police he kept walking on his front porch to enter his home.

Walker said Richardson then started to grab something from his waistband, causing Walker to think he had a weapon, so Walker started back down the porch stairs and tried to move away from Richardson. Walker told police Richardson kept walking toward him in an aggressive manner, at which point he told police Richardson was shot, according to the report.

Emergency medical technicians arrived and took Richardson to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police then took Walker to the Bi-State Justice Building Center, where he underwent further questioning at the department’s Criminal Investigations Division before being released.

During the crime scene investigation, officers did not find a weapon on Richardson.

At presstime, the shooting was still under investigation.
