Baylor beats K-State on Martin’s FG with eight seconds left

-

WACO, Texas—Connor Martin kicked a 29-yard field goal with eight seconds left to give Baylor a 37-34 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

Martin missed three field goals and an extra point, but his third made field goal in the game counted the most for Baylor (4-2, 2-1 Big 12).

Jalen Hurd had 11 catches for 135 yards, and the former Tennessee running back also ran for 56 yards and a touchdown for the Bears, who last year won only once in coach Matt Rhule’s first season. Trestan Ebner ran for 100 yards, and Charlie Brewer was 30-for-44 passing for 296 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Alex Barnes ran 22 times for 250 yards and three touchdowns for Kansas State (2-4, 0-3).

Barnes opened the fourth quarter with a 48-yard TD run that tied the game at 20 before the Wildcats’ extra point was blocked. Thompson’s 52-yard TD with 10:38 left put the Wildcats ahead.

Brewer’s 21-yard TD pass to Denzel Mims tied the game again before Craig Williams’ 21-yard TD run with 6:41 left put the Bears back in front. Thompson threw a 28-yard TD pass to Dalvin Warmack with 4:26 left before Baylor went 76 yards in 12 plays for the winning kick.

West Virginia 38, Kansas 22

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— Will Grier threw four touchdown passes, and committed four turnovers, and No. 9 West Virginia beat Kansas 38-22 on Saturday.

West Virginia (5-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first five games for the second time in three seasons. The heavily-favored Mountaineers had no trouble moving the ball but Grier’s efforts to throw into tight coverage near the goal line cost his team plenty of points.

The Heisman Trophy hopeful was intercepted three times in the first half either in the end zone or at the goal line, two of them by cornerback Hasan Defense. Kansas (2-4, 0-3) entered the game leading the Big 12 with eight interceptions, including three returned for touchdowns.

Grier also had a third-quarter fumble on a scramble. West Virginia had committed six total turnovers in its previous four games.

Iowa State 48, Oklahoma State 42

STILLWATER, Okla.— Only guaranteed one series, third-string quarterback Brock Purdy made it count and ended up playing the rest of the game for Iowa State.

Purdy completed 18 of 23 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushed for a touchdown, to help Iowa State beat No. 25 Oklahoma State 48-42 on Saturday.

A true freshman who had played just one series before this game, Purdy stepped in for Zeb Noland—who was starting his fourth straight game in place of injured starter Kyle Kempt—on the second series and immediately sparked Iowa State (2-3, 1-2 Big 12).

The Cyclones entered the day ranked last in the Big 12 in both scoring (17.5 points per game, 122nd in the nation out of 130) and yards (299.5 per game, 123rd overall) but reached season highs in both categories, amassing 465 yards overall.

With Iowa State missing leading rusher David Montgomery because of an upper body injury, Purdy also led the Cyclones in rushing. He had 84 yards, including a 29-yard TD run, on 19 carries.
