From the director ... Twenty years and counting

- By Amber Lawrence

Twenty years and still fundraising.

This year we are celebrating our 20th year of raising funds for our community and cutting-edge breast cancer research. Twenty years is a long time and it is exciting to look back and see how far we have come in advancements, decreasing the mortality rate in breast cancer and giving back over $5 million dollars to our LOCAL service area to help those in need of screening and diagnostics. The funds raised help women receive anything from a mammogram to a biopsy, if needed.

But even after 20 years here educating the community, some still don’t know what we truly do, where our funds go, or what scientific breakthroughs the money you have raised has been put into action. As Southwest Region director for our local office, I am fortunate enough to get to see first-hand how these dollars help those in need.

I educate myself on the programs we fund and the research we do. Our volunteers work hard every day so that I can answer the phone and direct people on the other end to the free services they are needing. We have four local programs in our region that are here to assist these individuals. You can find those at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, Wadley Regional Medical Center, Genesis PrimeCare and Little River Memorial Hospital. Call our office at (903) 7919585 for more contact information to find out more about these services.

This year, we are headed to Downtown Texarkana, Front Street to celebrate 20 years of giving back to our community. Register and come and join us in the fight against Breast Cancer, come help us make a difference in the lives around us and the celebrate the ones we love the most.

Your registration and participation makes such a difference in people’s lives. We are more than just a race and we are more than just the color pink. I encourage you to learn more about our organization, our programs and a little more about the survivors you may know. I guarantee that you will receive a blessing.

And when you see the color pink, remember to schedule that mammogram or make sure your best friend schedules one.

Hope to see you all Saturday!
