GILMER, Texas—Pleasant Grove did something they hadn’t done in 17 years.

Bruce Garrett rushed for a game-high 138 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns as the Hawks shut out Gilmer, 14-0, at Jeff Traylor Stadium in a District 6-4A, Division II football game on Friday.

Pleasant Grove handed the Buckeyes their first shutout since 2001, when the Hawks defeated Gilmer in the state playoffs. It rained most of the game.

“I am really proud of our kids to get a district win on the road,” Pleasant Grove head coach Josh Gibson said. “We were resilient and didn’t turn the ball over. We scored often and early. Gilmer didn’t score so the defense kept coming up big.”

Pleasant Grove (6-2 overall) remains unbeaten in district at 2-0 while Gilmer slips to 4-4, 1-1.

The second half was a defensive battle that went back and forth and neither team scored.

Gilmer drove down to the Pleasant Grove 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, but the Black Hawk defense pushed the Buckeyes back to the 7-yard line. A fourth-down pass fell incomplete and Pleasant Grove took over on downs.

Pleasant Grove ran 23 plays in the first quarter, compared to just two for Gilmer. The Hawks rushed for 126 yards in the first, while the Buckeyes had minus-4.

Pleasant Grove’s Landon Jackson tackled Gilmer runner Darryl Bush in the end zone for a safety and the game’s first score.

Garrett found the end zone from a yard out to give the Hawks an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Garrett sprinted 33 yards down the field to put Pleasant Grove up 14-0 with 10:40 left in the second.

The Hawks totaled eight first downs in the first half,

and Gilmer only had two. Pleasant Grove outgained the Buckeyes, 145 yard to negative 4 yards in the first half.

Tyler Kelley intercepted a pass and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown but was flagged 15 yards for taunting at the 2-yard line. The Hawks took over at the Buckeyes’ 17-yard line, but failed to score.

Ryan Pickelman had an interception for PG with five minutes left in the second quarter, while teammate Nick Martin sacked quarterback Mason Hurt for a 10-yard loss.

James Wiggins finished with 51 yards on 15 rushes for the Hawks, while Darryl Bush had 51 yards on 11 totes to lead Gilmer.

Dylan Fluellen had three catches for 37 yards for the Buckeyes to lead all receivers.
