Pleasant Grove

- —BRIAN TYL

LAST WEEK: The Hawks shut out Gilmer, 14-0, to remain undefeated in district.

THIS WEEK:

Pleasant Grove (6-2, 2-0) hosts crosstown rival LibertyEylau (2-5, 1-0) in a District 6-4A, Division II game.

OFFENSIVE

STANDOUTS: RB Bruce Garrett rushed for 138 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. James Wiggins had

51 yards on 15 totes.

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS:

Tyler Kelley had an interception and returned it 59 yards. Ryan Pickelman had an interception. The defense scored the first points of the game when they tackled Gilmer’s running back in the end zone for a safety.

COACH JOSH GIBSON’S COMMENTS: “I am proud of our kids and coaches for earning this shutout. We found a way to get a stop when Gilmer had the ball on our 1-yard line. We didn’t throw an interception or lose a fumble in these conditions (rain). In other games across the state, there were probably a lot of turnovers in East Texas this past week; we didn’t beat ourselves. We created some turnovers and got a couple of interceptions.

“Our deep snapper, Reese Foster, did a heckuva job. He put it back there for Ben (Harmon) and Ben handled it well. We only had one miscue in our special teams when we bobbled a snap on a field goal attempt. The weather and conditions were tough, but we had great community support. They filled up the stands on the visitor side; that was pretty cool.

“Bruce had a big night, and we ran him a lot. We were able to get him to the edge. It was so wet that we couldn’t throw very much. He got a lot of tough yards for us, and I was proud of him.”
