Paul Pewitt in battle for second place

- By Brian Tyl

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas— There’s a three-way tie for second place and now is the time for separation.

Paul Pewitt (6-1, 3-1) hosts Elysian Fields (4-3, 3-1) at 7:30 p.m. today in a District 11-3A, Division II football game at Brahmas Stadium.

The Brahmas, Yellowjackets and Daingerfield (4-2, 3-1) are tied for second place in the district behind Waskom (6-1, 4-0). Daingerfield plays at Waskom today.

Paul Pewitt could take sole possession of second in the district or create a three-way tie for first (with a Waskom loss) with a victory.

“Elysian Fields is extremely talented,” Brahmas’ head coach Triston Abron said. “They are big up front and are probably the biggest that we have played this year. They have good skill players

at quarterback, running back, and receives. They are coached extremely well. We have our work cut out for us. “

Paul Pewitt is scoring an average of 29.4 points per contest and are giving up 17.4, while Elysian Fields is averaging 33.7 points per game and give up 26.7.

“We have to take care of the football,” Abron said. “Whenever we have to ball, we need to get close by either getting into the end zone or kicking a field goal. Our goal is to score on each possession. They are explosive, and we are going to try to limit them. We have to do a good job of containing them, and hopefully force them to make mistakes.”

La-Jathan Allen is the leading rusher for the Brahmas. Allen has racked up 682 yards on 105 carries (an average of 6.5 per touch) and has scored eight touchdowns.

“The atmosphere will be great,” Abron said. “If you aren’t at the football game, you are probably at the hospital. If you live here and are alive, then you will probably be at the game. The fans have traveled well, and we have received good support from them. I expect pretty weather, and my hope is that we put on a good show for our fan base. We are going to play hard and see what happens.”
