Brahmas go down to wire for victory

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas— LaDarian Johnson scored from the 4 with 36 seconds left to help lift Paul Pewitt to a 29-28 victory over Elysian Fields Friday at Brahma Stadium.

The Brahmas finished rushing 54 times for 345 yards; they did not attempt a pass.

La-Jathan Allen had 19 carries for 112 yards for the winners, and QB Cross Holder added 11 rushes for 71 yards and a score.

The Yellowjack­ets (4-4, 3-2) struck first, but D.J. Turner’s 6-yard TD run, followed by Holder’s 2-point run game Pewitt an 8-7 lead in the first quarter.

Holder had a 1-yard sneak midway through the second quarter, but Elysian Fields responded with a score. The 2-point try failed, preserving a 15-13 lead at half by the Brahmas.

Deiontray Hill raced 11 yards for a Pewitt score, answered by a late third-quarter EF TD.

The Yellowjack­ets scored with 3:11 remaining in the game on Ryan Wilkerson’s second TD run, giving the Bulls their second deficit.

In the final minute, Johnson’s heroics set up Holder’s PAT kick for the winning point.

Hughes Springs 32, Redwater 0

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas— Nakia Lee led a punishing ground attack for Hughes Springs, and the Mustangs pitched a shutout on the defensive side in a 32-0 rout of Redwater.

Lee carried 15 times for 133 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs, who chewed up 354 yards on the ground.

Jayvon Kennedy added 10 carries for 77 yards and one score, and Bryce Johnston and Isaiah Bolden also scored rushing touchdowns for Hughes Springs.

The Mustangs improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in District 7-3A play with the win. Redwater drops to 1-7, 1-3.

Redwater plays host to Mount Vernon and Hughes Springs visits New Boston next Friday.

James Bowie 18, Maud 14

SIMMS, Texas—Ty Watts capped an 82-yard drive that chewed up 3:57 of the final 4:30 with his 2-yard touchdown dive, lifting James Bowie to a narrow win over Maud at Pirate Stadium.

Watts led the Pirate rushing attack—which rolled up 286 yards on 55 carries—with 27 totes for 133 yards and his TD.

Duncan Hammonds and QB Evan Barron also had scoring runs for James Bowie (5-3, 3-0).

Hammonds got the Pirates on the board first with his 35-yard jaunt with less than five minutes left in the opening half.

The Cardinals took an 8-6 lead into the locker rooms after Payton Windham connected with Hunter Thomas for a 14-yard TD with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. Windham threw two TDs for Maud (0-8, 0-3).

Barron scored with 7:04 left in the third quarter on a 9-yard run, and Windham hit Ryan Griffin for a 34-yard strike with 6:o0 remaining in the third.

It remained 14-12 Cardinals until Watts’ late TD.

Linden-Kildare 41, Timpson 40

LINDEN, Texas—Linden-Kildare scored a pair of late fourth-quarter touchdowns and Jacob Owen passed to Red Tyson for the winning 2-point conversion as the host Tigers rallied for a 41-40 victory over the Bears in District 11-3A action.

Linden-Kildare improves to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in district while Timpson dips to 3-6, 2-3.

Timpson took a 34-27 lead into the final quarter before L-K’s Owen connected with Marquise Jones for a 7-yard scoring toss with 9:27 remaining. The PAT failed, leaving the Tigers with a 34-33 deficit.

The Bears’ Jordan Osby 10-yard run with 4:41 left to play. Osby was the workhorse for the visitors, carrying the ball 39 times for 319 yards and five touchdowns. However, the PAT failed and Timpson clung to a narrow 40-33 advantage.

The lead was short-lived. Johnson, who led L-K with 185 yards rushing on 23 carries, broke loose on his 6-yard scoring run with 3:01 remaining. Owen then found Tyson for the 2-point conversion pass, giving the Tigers the come-from-behind win.

Owen completed 13 of 20 attempts for 206 yards and three scores. He connected with Ty Patterson (86 yards), Tyson (13 yards) and Jones (7 yards) for touchdowns.
