Redwater falls to Mount Vernon

MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas— Mount Vernon took control of each set and swept its Class 3A bi-district volleyball match against Redwater.

The Lady Tigers held a 10-point lead at set-point in the opener, built a 9-1 advantage in the second set and navigated a 2-6 point lead for much of the third set of a 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 win Tuesday at Willie Williams Gym.

With Mount Vernon holding a 24-14 lead in the first, the Lady Dragons had one of its longest rallies of the match, scoring six straight with Sydney Hornbuckle at the line.

Beth Kellum, the only sophomore for the Tigers, put down one of her seven kills to end the set.

Mount Vernon (21-12) opened the second set on a 6-0 run and led 9-1 before Redwater scored four in a row. The Tigers answered with another 9-1 streak to go up 18-6, and the teams traded points the rest of the second set.

Redwater tied the third set at 2 and came within a point twice more, but at 10-8 MV took 5 of the next 6 to build a 15-9 lead. The closest the score was the rest of the way was five points.

Junior middle Bailey Thomas led the Tigers at the net with 11 kills and five blocks. Madisen Hatch contribute­d five kills, Heather Brown added 11 digs and Sam Lowry 19 assists.

Karlee Carmony had seven kills and Bella Fernandez six kills for the Dragons, who ended their season at 21-9. Keeley Wilbur had 12 assists, and Ally Walston chipped in 12 digs.

Mount Vernon plays the winner of today’s Tatum-Sabine match in the area round later this week.
