- By Jennifer Middleton

Liberty-Eylau Independent School District’s Board of Trustees approved the 201819 audit during the regular meeting Thursday.

Representatives from Thomas and Thomas CPAs gave a presentation on the district’s funds and accounting practices.

“In our opinion the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the district,” Thomas and Thomas’s Tim Holt said.

In other business, the board approved Targeted Improvement Plans for 2018-19. These are required by the state, as the L-E Early Childhood Center and L-Elementary were identified as Improvement Required by the Texas Education Agency for the 2017-18 school year. L-E Middle School was also identified as needing Comprehensive Support.

“They have been submitted to the state, and the state has reviewed those and made recommendations and that’s what you have before you,” Daryl Cameron, state and federal program director, told the board. The plans were developed by campus leadership teams consisting of parents, teachers, business representatives and administrators.

District Business Manager Susie Byrd also gave the financial report and said the district had $6.5 million in total cash and investments and had collected $7 million in revenue and $2.9 million in taxes.

Trustees also heard a report from Superintendent Ronnie Thompson, who said enrollment as of Oct. 31 is 2,476, which is 25 students down from where the district ended last year.

“It’s holding steady,” he told the board.

In other business, the board approved the high school student council’s trip to Los Angeles on May 17-22.

L-EHS Principal Kendrick Smith said the students would raise money to go on the trip and that it would not use budgeted funds. He added that it will be an experience none of the students would ever forget.

“This will be a great opportunity for our students to see some sights outside the Eylau,” he told the board.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 20 in the Board Room, 2901 Leopard Drive, Texarkana, Texas.
