Local teen wins state poster contest

- By Karl Richter

A local eighth-grader is one of three winners of a poster design contest promoting reduction of air pollution from cars.

Damajeon Neal, 13, of Texarkana, Texas, won his age group in the Live and Breathe Texas Kids Poster Contest, part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s Drive Clean Texas

campaign, according to a TxDOT news release.

Each winner will receive $500 and a framed copy of their poster. Advance Auto Parts stores and repair shops that are members of the Automotive Service Association-Texas will display the winning posters in May 2019. The winners will also be recognized at ASA-Texas’ annual conference in Fort Worth, Texas.

“We needed help raising awareness about the importance of clean air in Texas, so we turned to our state’s most valuable resource—its youth,” said Beth Risch, chief operating officer of ASA. “The three winning entries do a spectacular job of illustrating why we should all do our part to protect our state’s air quality.”

Advance and ASA-Texas sponsored the contest, which was open to kindergarten through 12th-grade students statewide. Students submitted posters that encourage Texas drivers to “do their part” to help reduce harmful car emissions. Posters also could show how Texans “live and breathe.”

One winner was selected from each of three age categories: kindergarten through fifth grade, grades six through eight and grades nine through 12. Neal’s fellow winners are Gloria Liu, 8, of Cross Roads, Texas, and Autumn Stump, 14, of Woodway, Texas.
