Police seek suspect in Mineral Springs man’s shooting

Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a suspect in a shooting that occurred about 9 p.m. Sunday near Washington, Ark, according to a press release.

An attempted first-degree murder warrant for James Stuart, 61 of Washington, Ark. has been issued and deputies are attempting to locate him, according to Sheriff James Singleton. Stuart is also expected to face first-degree battery and terroristi­c act charges, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

The alleged victim is Larry Works, 58, of Mineral Springs.

Works said he and a few people were at a blue house on Clay Hill having a conversati­on with James Stuart about horses when Stuart allegedly got mad and pushed Work’s nose with his finger, according to the press release..

Works said a physical altercatio­n between he and Stuart occurred.

According to Works, Stuart stated, “I got you. I’ll be back.”

Stuart left but Works stated he stayed and was talking with others.

Works stated as he was in the process of leaving, Stuart allegedly pulled up, blocking his white 2006 Ford Expedition, the press release states.

A witness stated that Stuart was standing about five feet from a tree and had a rifle in his hands, allegedly aiming it at Works, according to the press release. The witness heard several shots and ran back in the house. When coming back out of the house, the witness said Works was bleeding and the witness drove the victim to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana.

Wadley officials contacted the Hempstead County Sheriff’s Department about a victim of a gunshot wound that occurred on Hempstead County Road 14
