TISD to host production of ‘Antigone’

-

Texarkana Independent School District will host the American Shakespeare Center 2018-19 Hand of Time Tour production of the Sophocles drama “Antigone” on Feb. 27, at the Sullivan Performing Arts Center & John Thomas Theatre, 3941 Summerhill Road.

Doors open and pre-show music begins at 7 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“Antigone,” the ASC’s first foray into Greek tragedy, reaches across 2,500 years to speak to us today with surprising relevancy. In the aftermath of her brothers’ bloody war, Antigone is left torn. Her brother, Eteocles, will be honored, but her brother, Polyneices, will be shamed and denied funeral rites. In this ancient tale, Antigone stands for morality in spite of punishment as one of the earliest heroines in drama. Sophocles’s drama from 441 BC examines divinity, obedience and law—and how love overcomes them all.

The special performance from American Shakespeare Center is funded through the generosity of an anonymous donor from Bancorp South along with the support of the Texas High School Tiger Theatre Company and Tiger Theatre Booster Club.

Since 1988, the American Shakespeare Center has toured the country with shows incorporating Shakespeare’s staging conditions.

Based out of Staunton, Va., the company’s mission is to recover the joys and accessibility of Shakespeare’s theatre, language and humanity by exploring the English Renaissance stage and its practices through performance and education. More information about the ASC is available at americanshakespearecenter.com.

The show is free, but tickets are required. They may be picked up at the TISD Administration Office, 4241 Summerhill Road, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. To have tickets mailed, contact TISD via phone at 903.794.3651 ext. 1013 or email at tisdpr@txkisd.net.
