Organization calls attention to hunger during Hunger Action Month

- — From Staff Reports

Harvest Texarkana is gearing up for Hunger Action Month, celebrated in September.

To kick it off, Harvest will have its annual luncheon to commemorate the event at noon Aug. 27 at Williams Memorial Methodist Church.

The luncheon will feature guest speakers who will talk about hunger’s impact on people. Harvest volunteers, pantries and donors will be recognized during the event.

Tickets for the luncheon are $10, and reservations can be made by calling 870-774-1398 or by emailing development@hrfb.org. Carryout lunches can be ordered in advance.

In September, Harvest Texarkana will join other food banks in the Feeding America network to call attention to hunger and the millions of people who are food-insecure.

These events are part of Harvest Regional Food Bank’s “30 Ways in 30 Days Campaign,” identifying simple ways the public can support efforts to eliminate hunger in the region.

Hunger is a problem here, with more than 55,000 food-insecure people in the Texarkana area, said Camille Wrinkle, Harvest executive director.

“Hunger doesn’t have a season, but for the month of September, we want to raise as much awareness as possible about the issue, especially in our own community. One in six adults and one in four children deal with a lack of food. These are the people we live and work with every day,” she said.

Many businesses in the community will support Harvest during Hunger Action Month by holding special events to benefit the nonprofit, including Texas Roadhouse, El Chico, Taste and See, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Fairfield Inn & Suites, Raising Cane’s and Ledwell Machinery.

Hunger Action Month T-shirts can be ordered from Harvest Regional Food Bank for $15 to $20, depending on shirt size.

The full 2019 Hunger Action Month calendar is on the Harvest Regional Food Bank website at harvestregionalfoodbank.org or on their Facebook page at facebook.com/harvesttxk.
