Hawks find their form

PITTSBURG, Texas — Rock of Gibraltar, move over.

Pleasant Grove played tough, solid offense and throttled Pittsburg, 49-19, in a District 6-4A football game at Pirate Stadium on Friday.

“I was really fired up about the win,” Hawk head coach Josh Gibson said. “It was an important game. The kids played dominant football. We were up 35-7 early, so we were able to rest some starters. I was happy to give some other kids playing time.”

Hawk quarterbac­k Ben Harmon threw for 177 yards on 9-of-10 passing and a pair of TD passes.

Bruce Garrett, KJ Hicks and Sergio Rodriguez had two touchdowns apiece for Pleasant Grove (6-1, 1-0).

Hicks found the end zone from a yard out with 5:27 left in the third to give the Hawks a 42-13 lead.

Pleasant Grove’s Jalen Woodside ran to his left on a quarterbac­k keeper and scored with 9:11 to go in the fourth to put the game out of reach, 49-19.

Pleasant Grove took a 28-point lead into the locker room at halftime, 35-7.

Garrett had two touchdowns in the first half on runs of 14 and 8 yards for the Hawks.

PG’s Sergio Rodriguez caught a pair of touchdowns from Ben Harmon, the first a 40-yard completion with 8:24 left in the second quarter. Rodriguez’s second score was on a 28-yard snag with 5:26 to go until halftime.

Hicks plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 9:40 to go in the second for the Hawks.

Kemarian McCain threw a 10-yard pass to Promous Morrison for the lone Pirate (3-4, 0-1) score with 3:23 left to go in the first quarter.

Garrett led Pleasant Grove’s receivers with four grabs for 83 yards. Teammate Landon Jackson had a catch that went for 43 yards.
