Race for the Cure

Texarkana comes together to help defeat breast cancer

-

Today, thousands will converge on downtown Texarkana to participate in the annual Komen Texarkana Race for the Cure. Since 1998, Texarkana residents and those from the surrounding area have gathered to show support for the victims and survivors of breast cancer and to raise money to hasten the day when when that disease will be nothing more than a memory.

This year marks the 21st anniversary for the local race. Organizers are hoping for 5,000 participants with a fundraising target of $350,000.

It’s a tribute to the spirit and generosity of our community that the local Komen affiliate has been able to make such a big impact for so long. And your continued support will ensure they can continue to do great things in the years to come.

This morning the race will be held downtown for the second year. Registration will still be available today from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. There will be a top fundraiser and sponsor breakfast, followed by team pictures. Opening ceremonies are at 8:30 a.m., with the 5K race kicking off at 9 a.m. Closing ceremonies on Front Street will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Many downtown streets will be closed by 8:30 a.m., so it’s best to get there early to find parking. You can also park and take a shuttle from Arkansas High School’s Razorback Stadium, the Wadley Regional Medical Center parking lot, Beech Street Baptist Church, St. Edward Catholic Church and First United Methodist Church.

Breast cancer survivors can park at Regions Bank and be shuttled to the race.

The Komen Race for the Cure is an outstanding opportunity to join your friends and neighbors to help fight breast cancer. It’s a worthy cause and one we all should support.
