Hornets down Mustangs to climb atop standings

HUGHES SPRINGS, Texas — Davarious Clark rushed for a pair of Hooks touchdowns, covering 1 and 87 yards, and Mason Vasquez accounted for three scores to help the Hornets take the District 7-3A, Division I lead with a 35-19 win over Hughes Spring Friday.

Vasquez threw a 65-yard TD to Benji Johnson and rushed for scores of 2 and 1 yards. Hooks (6-1, 3-0) rushed for 258 yards and threw for 168.

Andrew Gaul rushed for three Mustang touchdowns. Gaul had scores of 1, 1 and 23 yards for Hughes Springs (6-2, 2-2).

The Mustangs had 243 yards rushing and 113 passing.

Paul Pewitt 32, DeKalb 26

OMAHA-NAPLES, Texas — Paul Pewitt scored the go-ahead touchdown on Cross Holder’s 22-yard run with 4:12 remaining, and the Brahmas’ La-Jathan Allen intercepte­d a DeKalb pass with only 22 seconds left to preserve the hard-fought District 11-2A, Div. II victory.

Pewitt stayed unbeaten at 7-0 and climbs to 4-0 in district while the Bears dip to 5-2, 2-2.

The game was tied at 26-all after three quarters before the Brahmas moved in for the decisive score.

Allen’s intercepti­on — his second of the night — clinched the win. Allen finished with 11 tackles.

But he was a two-way standout, rushing for 183 yards and three touchdowns offensivel­y. He carried the ball 12 times and scored on runs of 60, 35 and 2 yards.

Pewitt’s other touchdown came on Keiuntray Hawkins’ 14-yard run.

The Bears, who fought back from a 26-14 third-quarter deficit, tallied a pair of third-quarter scores to pull even at 26-26.

Kole Dooley scored on a pair of 1-yard plunges, but the Bears’ missed both extra points (run and kick attempts) as the score remained tied.

DeKalb’s first-half scores were by Timon Proby (7-yard run) and Jamar Vaughn (1-yard run).

Pewitt finished with 411 yards total offense — all on the ground — while the Bears had 292, with 265 coming on the ground. DeKalb had three turnovers while the Brahmas did not have any.

Mount Enterprise 48, Maud 28

MOUNT ENTERPRISE, Texas — Maud had a solid rushing attack but unbeaten Mount Enterprise had a better one in this District 10-2A, Division II contest.

The end results was the host Wildcats coasting to a 48-28 win over the visiting Cardinals.

Maud rolled up 355 yards on the ground, with Tucker Sanders gained 206 yards on 31 carries and Rayne Bailey netting 144 on 26 totes. Sanders scored three touchdowns on runs of 2, 1 and 8 yards while Bailey score on a 1-yard plunge. Both also ran for 2-point conversion­s for the Cardinals (1-6, 0-2).

Mount Enterprse (7-0, 2-0) amassed 437 yards on the ground, with quarterbac­k Kentre Miller rushing for more than 300 yards. Miller scored on runs of 24, 99, 44 and 71 yards.

The Wildcats led 26-6 at halftime and both teams battled to a 22-22 deadlock in the second half.

Maud plays Overton next week.
