The Legend lives on: ‘Boggy Creek’ coming soon to DVD and Blu-ray

TEXARKANA — Bring the Fouke Monster into your home with the restored and remastered version of “The Legend of Boggy Creek,” available on DVD and Blu-ray by Dec. 1, just in time for holiday viewing of this creature feature.

Pam Pierce Barcelou, one of director Charles B. Pierce’s daughters, had the 1972 film restored with 4K technology by the George Eastman Museum in New York. Since its completion earlier this year, she has screened the movie at several locations, including a premiere weekend event in June at Texarkana’s Perot Theatre.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo will be available for a retail price of $29. Pre-orders are available at LegendOfBoggyCreek.com. It will ship on or before the first day in December.

“We’re doing a Blu-ray/DVD two-disc package,” Barcelou said, noting it will be available at Monster Mart in Fouke, Arkansas, in addition to the website.

She said it’s also now going through the channels for Amazon, Apple, Google and Vudu. “Those will be available soon in VOD, video on-demand,” she said. “And then the physical media I will also be adding to Amazon.” She anticipates it will be on those platforms in roughly 60 days.

As of right now, Barcelou is distributing the Bluray/DVD herself. She said the George Eastman Museum has continued to help in this process.

It’s been a lot of work, such as preparing the closed captioning and the chapters for scenes in the movie.

“We divided it into about 17 chapters so that when you go to your Blu-ray you can directly go straight to ‘Lonely Cry’ or ‘Hey, Travis Crabtree.’ You can skip to the different scenes,” Barcelou said.

This package release won’t have bonus features. She’ll do that in a future version, perhaps for the 50th anniversary.

“I have a lot of material for the bonus features. We’ve been collecting interviews. We’ll be doing more interviews and recordings, the Q&A’s and stuff for our bonuses,” Barcelou said.

But the demand for a Bluray/DVD release now was great.

“The pressure was really on. It was every single day,” Barcelou said, adding, “Really and truly, I am giving everyone a new movie. This is the first authorized home release in the film’s history. It’s like watching a black-and-white versus the real movie … you see things you didn’t even know were in there before.”

She said she wanted to do her very best.

“The movie is really beautiful,” Barcelou said. She aims to do the bonus features justice, too.

How does she feel at this moment, seeing her dad’s first movie get a release that brings it into the homes of “Boggy Creek” fans?

“It’s very exciting, I’m thrilled, but it also feels like it was just meant to be. It feels like it’s a natural thing, and everything really did fall into place pretty easy, all the way up to when we premiered there,” Barcelou said, adding that she’ll have screening dates to announce soon for New York City and Los Angeles.

“I’ve worked really hard on those theaters. We’ve sold out some of our shows. New people are seeing it for the first time and are enjoying it,” she said.
