Community plans number of events to honor veterans
Veterans Day is Nov. 11 and there are forthcoming events in the Twin Cities to mark the holiday and salute those who have served our country. Here is a list of events from Friday, Nov. 8, to Thursday, Nov. 14:
Friday, Nov. 8
The Texarkana Gazette hosts its Salute to Veterans Reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Williams Memorial United Methodist church at 4000 Moores Lane. RSVP to 870-330-7550.
Saturday, Nov. 9
The annual Veterans Day Parade start at 11 a.m. Saturday at East Broad and Hazel streets.
Several high school bands will participate — area business and civic organizations as well as clubs and churches are also expected.
This year’s parade theme will be “American Legion -100 years” in tribute to the organization’s 1919 founding.
Monday, Nov. 11
Third-grade students at Red Lick Elementary will present a Veterans Day program at 2 p.m. in the cafeteria. All veterans in the community are invited to attend.
Tuesday, Nov. 12
The Liberty-Eylau chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America will host a luncheon honoring all military veterans at 10:30 a.m. at the Liberty-Eylau High School library. Thursday, Nov. 14
Veterans are invited to attend a Veterans Luncheon at 11 a.m. Nov. 14 on the Texas A&M-Texarkana Campus.
Guest speaker will be Ret. Marine Corps Cpl. Jacob P. Schick. Schick overcame adversity, including crippling wounds, that ended his active duty service. Since then, this third-generation Marine has established himself as a professional speaker as well as an actor, seen in films such as “American Sniper” and “A Star Is Born.”
He is CEO of 22Kill, an organization that seeks to raise awareness about veteran suicide, PTSD and depression.
