Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on another local home

- —Staff Reports

TEXARKANA, Texas _ Habitat for Humanity’s local office continued its home building efforts Friday, with yet another ground breaking ceremony for a home to be built at the Norris Cooley Road and Atlanta Street intersection.

Several of the organization’s board members, committee members and builders collected at the future home’s construction site to celebrate a new beginning on the Texas-side with this being the first HFH home to be built on the Texas side of the state line since 2016.

Local resident Barbara Jackson will be the future home-buyer with an interest free mortgage. The HFH mortgages are made interest free largely because of both the volunteer labor and donated construction materials that go into the future home’s completion.

Jackson herself, will be working along side volunteers throughout the home’s construction phase in order add her “sweat equity” to the project.

John Harris, with the local Rogers Equipment and Construction firm, will be the project manager, as he has for previous local Habitat projects.

“Habitat has a special place in my heart and it’s always nice to work with such a hard working group of people,” Harris said in a recent press release.

The local Habitat office, which first opened on the

Texas side in 1987, built it first home in Texarkana, Ark. last year and recently began work on its second Arkansas-side home project earlier this year. The office also built and completed a six-month construction project resulting in a home for a military veteran, living in Nash.

Anyone who would like to volunteer their labor in helping built this most recent project, can call 903-832-1746 and leave a message with a return telephone number.

Besides volunteer labor, area residents are also welcomed to make financial contributions as well as donate construction material in addition to offering advisory or expertise services. They can call the same number and leave a message and callback number.
