Banker announces bid for Ward 6 seat
TEXARKANA, Texas — Local banker Jay Davis has announced his candidacy for the Ward 6 seat on the City Council.
Davis, a native Texarkanian who serves on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, said Monday he would be filing for a spot on the ballot as soon as possible.
The seat is being vacated by Josh Davis — no relation to Jay Davis — who is running for Bowie County tax assessor-collector. A special election to replace Josh Davis will take place Jan. 28, 2020.
Jay Davis is a mortgage loan officer with State Bank, according to a letter addressed to “Stakeholders of the City of Texarkana, Texas” he distributed before Monday’s City Council meeting.
He has served on the board of trustees for the Pleasant Grove Independent School District, the TIRZ Advisory board, the steering committee for the “Renew Texarkana” comprehensive plan, the Harvest Texarkana board and the Texarkana Board of Realtors. He is a member of Leadership Texarkana’s 2020 class.
Davis is the public address announcer for the Pleasant
Grove Showstoppers drill team and Pride in Motion band.
“My decision to seek this seat is motivated primarily by a desire to give a little back to the community that has been so generous to me. I do not undertake this challenge lightly and I understand well the demands and burdens of public service. …
“I have felt the desire to serve in this role since 2014 and feel that I am now in a position to hit the ground running if elected,” the letter states.
Those who wish to file as candidates can pick up an information packet in the city secretary’s office. The filing deadline is Dec. 19.
Candidates for City Council must be U.S. citizens and registered voters who have lived in Texas for a year and in the ward they want to represent for six months.
