Ridiculous Outrage

Actor attacked online for handshake, conversation with president

-

For LSU fans Monday night’s national championship game was the highlight of the college football season. But for some film fans, the game was nothing compared to the outrage they found in the stadium stands.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were at the game. So was actor Vince Vaughn, best known for such films as “Swingers” and “Wedding Crashers.”

And — horror of horrors — Vaughn was filmed shaking hands and having a pleasant conversation with the President of the U.S.

Imagine that.

Predictably, the person who took the video posted online to his Twitter feed, with the comment, “I’m very sorry to have to share this video with you. All of it, every part of it.”

And then the uproar started.

Social media was abuzz with those who could not believe their eyes. How dare Vince Vaughn shake President Trump’s hand. How dare he share the same space for even a moment.

There were calls for Vaughn to be “canceled” — which we hope just means a boycott of his work.

Vaughn is a self-described libertarian and has supported conservative candidates for office in the past. But apparently this went beyond the pale for many of his — we guess former — fans.

This is just silly. No matter what anyone thinks of current occupant of the White House, showing common courtesy to the President of the U.S. is simply the right thing to do.

Fortunately, there were plenty of comments saying the same on the Twitter feed. So not everyone is embracing the outrage.

But it’s a terrible reflection on our divided society that so many are.
