Lady Tigers fall to Royse City

The Lady Bulldogs pull away late to beat Texas High, 75-59

TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas High chased Royse City, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to pull away late to win Tuesday’s District 15-5A basketball game.

The Lady Tigers, who led just 36 seconds after scoring the game’s first points, clawed their way to a 1-point deficit several times but got no closer in a 75-59 loss to Royse City at

Tiger Center.

The Bulldogs (19-5, 2-0) shot 51 percent from the floor on 25-of49 field goals.

Texas High (11-10, 1-1) finished shooting 33 percent on 21-of-64 shooting from the floor. The Tigers out-rebounded RC, 43-37, and had 20 turnovers compared with 18 by the Bulldogs.

Texas High sliced Royse City’s lead to a single point three times in the third quarter, but the Tigers were never able to get the score even. The Bulldogs used a 12-6 run at the end of the third to take a 56-49 lead into the final quarter.

RC scored nine of its 19 fourth-quarter points from the foul stripe to edge away from Texas High, which scored just 10 in the period.

Kerrighan Dunn scored 16 of her team-high 22 points for the Tigers during a 31-point second quarter. Ashanti Northcross added 11 points for THS, and Jacia

Collins had 10. Keturah Johnson pulled down 10 rebounds, and Northcross had seven.

The Bulldogs pulled away over the final 1:32 of the first quarter, closing the period on a 6-0 run to go up 15-7 at the first break.

Texas High cut its deficit to four (17-13) in the second, but Royse City quickly regained an 8-point advantage at 21-13. The Tigers scored five in a row to

make it 21-18 with 5:51 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs scored the next 13 points to take a commanding 34-18 lead with 3:14 left until intermissi­on. Dunn drained back-to-back three-pointers for THS to start a 20-6 rally to close out the second quarter.

The big run by the Tigers brought the score to 40-38 at halftime.

Maggie Hutka led Royse City in the game with 22 points and had 15 rebounds, and McKenna Anderson scored 21.

Royse City won the junior varsity game, 39-24, with Braveon Hunt leading THS with 13 points.

The Bulldogs won the freshman game, 35-16. Anna Schults led the Tigers with six points.
