Local Go Red program provides heart-health resources for women
Wadley Senior Clinic, at 1307 Trinity Blvd in Texarkana, Ark., is having a Go Red event from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, which is National Wear Red Day. Go Red for Women is a movement to encourage women to know their numbers. Five numbers that all women should know to take control of their heart health are total cholesterol, HDL (good) cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and Body Mass Index. Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases. The event is “come and go” and several medical providers from the Wadley HeartCare Network will be on hand to check blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels and have important heart health information available.
Heart-healthy snacks with recipe cards will be handed out, and every woman dressed in red will receive a free gift. “Not only can women have their blood pressure read, they will get explanations of what the top and bottom numbers mean,” said event coordinator Shelby Brown. “We will have a chest pain coordinator on hand, a CPR demonstration,
and cardiologists will be available for informal discussion.” Also, the Wadley Scan will on hand with special pricing of $39.95 for women on that day only. The scan will help determine risk of stroke. Appointments can be made in advance by calling 877-792-3539.
Wadley Senior Clinic will have formal presentations by cardiac professionals all this month:
Feb 13: Kathy Robertson on Congestive Heart Failure
Feb. 19: Dr. Kevin O’Sullivan on Understanding Blood Pressure Numbers
Feb. 20: Daniel Owen on Hypertension and How it Effects Your Heart
TBA: Dr. Poongodhai Ramachandran on Afib: What it is and How it Increases Your Risks for a Heart Event and Other Life Threatening Issues.
Each presentation will start at 10 a.m.
Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80% of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red for Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health.
