Valentine’s Dilemma:

‘Best friend’ or another gem?

- KATE STOW contributed to this article.

Couples might not need advice when purchasing the standard heart-shaped boxes of chocolates or flowers. But when it comes to jewelry, sweethearts may feel overwhelmed. Here are some tips:

Discover his or her style

Pay attention to the pieces he or she wears each day or on special occasions. For those who like a direct approach, ask them to point out appealing items in a magazine. If you’re still in doubt, choosing their birthstone is always a win.

Understand diamonds

The Better Business Bureau notes that a diamond’s value is based on color, cut, clarity and carat. Often referred to as the “four Cs,” these criteria refer to the grade of the color — the color, the way the diamond is finished — the cut, how flawless the diamond is — clarity, and its weight — carat.

“A round diamond is always in style, but we are seeing a lot of oval cuts lately, too,” said Tammy Head of Harp Jewelers in Atlanta, Texas. “While there are several colors of diamonds, the chocolates and yellows are still in style, but we prefer to stock the clear diamonds that show all the facets.”

Set a budget

Going in blindly may leave consumers spending more than they intended. Many jewelers are willing to negotiate or may sell affordable pieces that mimic desired items in style and appearance.

Prestige brands aren’t necessarily better

Don’t be afraid to walk into a local jewelry store and ask the staff’s opinion.

Keep proportion in mind

Bulky jewelry may look awkward on people with slight frames, while smaller pieces may get lost on taller or fuller-figured people. Work with the jeweler on scale, even noting a loved one’s figure if necessary.

Age and relationship stage must also be considered

For the younger — or newer — couple starting out with a bracelet or necklace would be ideal. Beads and charms for an existing bracelet or chain aren’t as popular as they once were, but are still good choices.

Colored gemstones

These are very popular. The BBB notes various new stone treatments have been developed to improve their appearance and durability. Such treatments, however, may adversely affect the value of the gem and require special care. Always ask the jeweler if there’s any special maintenance required. Shoppers should also ask if a stone is natural, synthetic or imitation before purchasing anything.

The most popular gemstones are the Alexandrites and Tanzanites, Tammy said, “because they are less typically seen.”

Gold

When used alone, the word gold implies an item is all gold or 24 karat. But the BBB notes that gold is naturally soft and, as a result, is typically mixed with other metals to improve its hardness and durability. The karat-quality marking indicates what proportion of gold is mixed with other metals. Lower-karat gold jewelry may include copper, silver, zinc, or other metals. Consumers should ask about these alloys and determine if the recipient is allergic to certain metals. Also, people with high acid content in their bodies may have their jewelry turn black as a result.

“We find that white gold is still the most popular, but yellow gold is making a strong comeback,” Tammy said. “The rose gold is more popular in the younger — teens and 20-something — set. But the big trend now is wearing them all together. You don’t have to stick with one color only.”

Understand the exchange policy

Even with the best intentions and thorough research, a gift of jewelry may not hit the mark. Before buying a piece, make sure you understand the exchange policy.

Buying jewelry can be intimidating, but a shopper working with a jewelers can find a beautiful piece their sweethearts will be proud to wear this Valentine’s Day.
